Chiefs News · Okemos Boys Water Polo team makes school history. Regional Champions three years running!

Fresh off their District 3 Championship win last weekend, the Okemos High School boys water polo team played three games this weekend, going 3-0 and winning the 2018 East Region Championship.  This is the program’s third consecutive win at this level! The team consists of a highly dedicated and well decorated group of athletes.  Under the guidance of Coaches Olesnavich, Kohler and Williams, they have logged 33-10 over the season and are currently ranked third in the state.

Eight teams played for the East Region Championship cup, hosted at Saline High School. The teams competing were Okemos, Birmingham Groves, Grand Blanc, Birmingham Seaholm, AA Huron, AA Pioneer, Dexter, and AA Skyline.

After playing AA Skyline to earn a slot at the State Championship, the Chiefs played Grand Blanc in the Regional Semi-Final for a decisive win (16 to 7).  The Championship game was against Dexter, a very strong and determined opponent.  The game was a pitched battle, with Dexter scoring the first goal and trading goals with the Chiefs to keep the score tied for much of the tense first half.  Okemos refused to give up and pulled away in the third quarter by 2 goals, built on this lead in the fourth quarter for a 3 goal victory (12 to 9).
