The varsity girls water polo team headed back down to Saline High School for the 2014 Hornet Invite and came away finishing in first place with a perfect 4-0 record.
The weekend tournament began with a convincing 15-0 victory over #8 Ann Arbor Skyline. Defense dominated the game, as the Chiefs did a great job limiting the offensive opportunities that Ann Arbor Skyline had. The offense proved to be balanced once again as eight different players tallied goals. Katie Dudley lead the way with four. Even more impressive was that nine different players recorded assists on the 15 goals for the game. Emily Wozena, Alex Chow, and freshman Isabella Morris each had two to lead the way. Goalie Rachel Sternik earned her first career shutout.
The team then turned around and faced a young, but improving 10th ranked Ann Arbor Pioneer squad. Defense continued to be the rule as the Chiefs shutdown Pioneer en route to a 9-2 victory. The team recorded a season high 20 steals in the game, and five different players tallied goals to continued the balanced offensive attack.
Winning the first two games put the Chiefs in as a #1 seed from their bracket, and in the afternoon they squared off against the other two top seeds #2 Ann Arbor Huron and #3 Saline. In the first game, the Chiefs continued it’s great play at both ends of the pool outpacing the River Rats 11-3. That set up another showdown with Saline, which battled the varsity team to a 1 goal game just days earlier.
The second match-up proved to be a tough match-up once again, but this time the varsity team created some separation to post an impressive 12-3 victory over the host Hornets.
The difficult schedule continues tonight as #4 Dexter comes into town. Come out and support the team – and wear black for the blackout in the stands! Varsity is scheduled to start at 6pm and JV will follow. Then the seven games in seven day stretch concludes tomorrow when varsity travels down to Birmingham Groves.
